If you’re planning a trip to Rome, chances are the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, and Trevi Fountain are already on your list. They’re must-see historical landmarks for a reason. But what if you could add a more personal, hands-on experience to your itinerary? One that lets you connect with Rome’s rich artistic history?
That’s exactly what I found. My family and I took a mosaic workshop at Studio Cassio in Rome. It was one of the highlights of our trip.
What Is Studio Cassio?
Tucked away in the heart of Rome, Studio Cassio is a family-run mosaic studio with deep historical roots. Founded in 1947 by the Cassio family (mosaic artists who have restored some of the Vatican’s most treasured works), the studio is a bridge between ancient tradition and contemporary creativity.
For over 70 years, Studio Cassio has been dedicated to preserving the techniques of Byzantine and Roman mosaics, while also making them accessible to visitors from around the world.
The Mosaic Workshop Experience
During the workshop, we were guided through every step of the mosaic-making process. From learning about the materials (called tesserae) to learning how to cut the tiles, the entire experience felt like stepping back in time, with the benefit of modern tools and an encouraging teacher.
What I loved most was the balance between tradition and self-expression. While we used templates for the design, we could pick which one we wanted, choose our colors, and even create the design if we wanted.
This was more than a class… it was learning new skills and a memory in the making.

A Creative Break from Sightseeing
Rome can be intense. There’s so much to see, do, and eat, and the crowds can be overwhelming. This workshop offered a slower, more mindful pace. It gave us a chance to catch our breath, connect with local artists, and leave with a handmade souvenir that’s far more meaningful than anything from a gift shop.
Whether you’re traveling solo or with others, this experience adds a beautiful, creative element to your Roman adventure.
I know my kids can only handle so many tours. A creative break was more than welcome.
Why You Should Add This to Your Rome Itinerary
You don’t have to skip the landmarks to enjoy something different. Add the Studio Cassio mosaic workshop alongside your visits to the Colosseum or St. Peter’s Basilica. You’ll leave with a deeper connection to the city and a work of art you created with your own hands. They also offer a micromosaic jewelry class that I’ve heard is fun!

Final Thoughts
Travel isn’t just about seeing. It’s also about doing. Our mosaic-making experience at Studio Cassio reminded us that creativity is a powerful way to connect with a place and its history. One of my sons loved it so much that he wants to pursue mosaics as a hobby now.
If you’re planning your Roman holiday, make space not just for ancient ruins, but for the living, breathing art of this incredible city.
